Reflexology

Reflexology is a natural therapy founded on the belief that your feet and hands are a reflection of all the systems, organs, glands and structures in your body. By applying gentle pressure to areas of the feet or hands, a Reflexologist can help the body restore its own healthy balance.

Reflexology aims to treat the individual as a whole, creating a state of harmony in both body and mind. It has the benefit of also being a deeply relaxing therapy, and during periods of relaxation the body takes the opportunity to heal, restore and energise itself.

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and can be especially helpful for long-term and recurring conditions.

Whether you are looking for support with an existing heath condition, want to reduce your day-to-day stress levels or would just like a little "me" time, my aim is to get you feeling happier, healthier and energised with specially-tailored Reflexology treatments.

During a Reflexology Treatment....

Before a Reflexology treatment commences there is a short consultation to gather information on the client's health and wellbeing.

Then the client will lie or sit, covered with a warm blanket and supported with pillows, so the client feels really comfortable, warm and relaxed. The client is fully clothed, apart from the feet (or hands).

The Reflexologist then begins the reflexology treatment with gentle pressure around the entire soles of the feet, and toes (or hands and fingers) which maps the entire body. A foot/hand massage completes the treatment. Some areas on the feet (or hands) might feel sensitive as the Reflexologist applies gentle pressure. Sensitive areas are a reflection of a body system or structure being out of balance and these areas are assisted back into balance as the Reflexologist works through the entire body mapped onto the sole or palm.

Reflexology is deeply relaxing and clients may feel deeply peaceful and on occasion fall asleep. It has been proven in scientific studies that Reflexology is particularly effective in easing the symptoms of anxiety and stress which may be especially beneficial for those managing long term health conditions.

After the Reflexology treatment, clients may need a little time to settle and return to their day.

Benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology is not intended as primary healthcare, but to work alongside the relationship you have with your doctor or healthcare provider.

Balance

Reflexology is a wonderful way of maintaining your body's healthy balance and general wellbeing, reducing the stresses and tensions that come with busy lifestyles and giving us a space to reflect on the mind, as well as the body..

Relaxation

Reflexology can induce a deep state of relaxation. Relaxing helps relieve tension and aids circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients, oxygen and energy to all parts of the body, and helping with the removal of toxins.

Health

While it is not a cure, Reflexology can be particularly helpful in managing many health conditions, especially constant or recurring ones that we might have come to accept over time as being a normal part of life.

Frequently asked questions

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different. Response to Reflexology can be immediate, or require several sessions. Often benefits can be seen after 4-5 sessions. Regular treatments provide the optimal opportunity for the body systems to initiate the self-healing, self balancing process.

For those with long term conditions, as body systems return to balance, the time period between treatments may be extended as treatment benefits are sustained for longer periods of time.

Can you diagnose my health problems?

Reflexology is not intended as primary healthcare but to work alongside the relationship you have with your doctor or healthcare provider.

Reflexologists cannot claim to diagnose or cure, but during a treatment we get 'feedback' as to which parts of the body are working well and which are not.

Sometimes Reflexology will highlight a specific area which is struggling or working hard to maintain your wellbeing; if a particular reflex point shows this kind of reaction I'll discuss it with you at the end of the session.

Does reflexology hurt?

You might find some areas feel sensitive to the touch, but Reflexology does not involve hard pressure. If there are particular points that feel uncomfortable during the session, it is beneficial to share that with the Reflexologist.

As a therapist I will be aware of the status of your feet, noticing how they feel, the temperature and colour. All these things play a part in understanding which areas of your body - as reflected through your feet - require a bit more care and attention.

Are there contraindications for reflexology?

Reflexology is contraindicated in the following circumstances:

Feeling acutely unwell

Within 24 hours of an aeroplane flight

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Acute undiagnosed pain

Contagious disease

High temperature / fever

Unstable heart condition

Organ transplant

For clients awaiting medical tests or procedures, who wish to start reflexology, treatment should be arranged once the outcome of the test or procedure is known.

What symptoms could I experience after a treatment? and how do I manage them?

The reflexology treatment is assisting the body back into balance, so it is normal to experience a response after a treatment. Symptoms can last for approx 48 hours and include:

temporary discomfort or pain

increased urination / change in bowel habits

tiredness / fatigue / need to sleep

change in digestion

headache

emotional release

vivid dreams

change in sleep pattern

Clients are encouraged to drink water, rest and relax and spend time outside in nature. A 15min Epsom salt bath or foot bath can also help to speed up the rate of toxin removal.

Please do contact me if you are concerned about any post-treatment reactions, you can call me any time on 07588 658 721.
